Abstract

An Intellectual Afraid

This article discusses the book "A Theory of the Labor Movement," by Selig Perlman. There are, to him, two irreconcilable views in modern labor. There is the false, impractical, "intellectual," and bad Hegelian obsession that labor intrinsically wants a new society. Then there is the sensible, sound and good view of labor as a business method in collective bargaining. This theory Perlman applies to the Russian and German revolutions, to the British labor movement and to American trade unionism. This makes the American Federation of Labor the finest expression of labor freedom.
