Abstract

It Seems to Heywood Broun

It is pleasant to find that a member of the Socialist Party led the fight for modification in Wisconsin. Liberals and radicals in general have been slow to see that this issue properly belongs in their program. Of course a man can be a sincere reformer and still believe in the abolition of alcohol. Nor need he be deterred by the ancient cry of States' rights. People who fought for woman suffrage and who are fighting now against child labor realize that this has often taken the place of patriotism as the first refuge of scoundrels. But in the development of political conditions prohibition has definitely become a cornerstone in the conservative system.
