Shanghai, which is dominated by British government, has been the scene in recent years of a struggle between the older British imperialists and the new American invaders. The British have tended to be more hostile than the Americans to the Nationalist movement and have deeply resented the action of the U.S. government in recognizing Nanking in advance of the other Powers. It is informed that the friction between the two groups has taken many interesting forms. There has been instances of underground campaign against the U.S. marines in Shanghai which has been conducted by British interests almost continuously since Calvin Coolidge, President of the U.S., last year declared that U.S. would not participate in any armed intervention in China further than to protect U.S. citizens in Shanghai.
