Biographies in Brief

This article literally appraises several biographies. In the biography "A Gallery of Eccentrics," by Morris Bishop his portrait gallery is far more interesting than the majority of such collections, since none of his subjects has hitherto sat for a modern biographical painting. "The Sword of State: Wellington After Waterloo," by Susan Buchan. Although the Duke of Wellington's great-great-niece modestly disclaims any scholarly designs in her amiable chit-chat about him, she does not always resist the temptation to point a few morals and adorn a few tales.
