When, some years ago, Elmer Rice wrote "The Adding Machine," a drama in which he adopted the "expressionistic" technique in an effort to heighten the effect of the drab story which he had to tell. Now "The Adding Machine" was one of the few expressionistic plays which succeeded at least to the extent of producing a novel effect, and there is no doubt that the technique which it employed is the logical extreme of the naturalistic method.
