William Green is president of the American Federation of Labor. Matthew Woll is leader. When Samuel Gompers was alive, "Matt" Woll, president of the Photo Engravers' Union, was known as the Crown Prince. It was understood that the "Old Man" was priming his protege to succeed him as president of the A.F. of L. Yet when Gompers died in 1924, and the Executive Council of the American Federation of Labor met to select a new head, one who would probably be approved by the regular convention in the fall, Matthew Woll was not chosen.
