All those joining Sandino forces are obliged to sign a pledge, or pauta, which was drawn up by a General in El Chipote in September, 1927, and which, among other things, embodies several conditions. Some of the conditions are that those who join the Army for the Defense of the Sovereignty of Nicaragua agree to: defend the sovereignty of Nicaragua and obey its military code; refuse to obey every order of Adolto Diaz and the foreigner and always act in the highest and noblest spirit; and defend not only Liberals, but all Nicaraguans, since all are betrayed by the present Government.
