In the Driftway

Harvesting is more monotonous, and the grain field lacks the fragrance of the meadow overlaid with newdried hay. The most eminent perfume makers of France have yet to produce a choicer scent. But probably it is well that the farm before the author promoted to the seat of a mowing machine, and it is a fair guess that the author in the Journal hasn't worked in a hayfield in twenty years. Actual farmers are an ungrateful lot with but little appreciation of their blessings, even when reminded of them by folks in the city. No doubt the farmer is what the politician calls him, the backbone of the nation, but his only evidence of that fact is that the end of the day so often finds him with a backache.
