The article discusses the book "Wolf Solent: A Novel," by John Cowper Powys. Powys's novel is not only prodigiously long but obviously ambitious. "Wolf Solent," is an intricate and at least superficially interesting tale of somewhat dubious significance. It is precious in style, fanciful in atmosphere and grandiose in intention. The hero, through whose mind the story is told, is a supersensitive young man who accepts a position as secretary to an eccentric squire in Dorset. He soon discovers that his employer is a sinister and perverted erotomaniac who intends that he shall busy himself with the composition of a scandalous chronicle of the countryside and it is only at the cost of violating his own integrity that he is able to perform the work for which he has bargained.
