The article focuses on the book "The Soul of the Primitive," by Lucien Lévy-Bruhi. "Lame Primitive" has here been made more readily accessible to English readers in an adequate translation by Lilian A. Clare. Professor Lévy-Bruhi develops further his general theory of "collective representations"--that is of concepts current in social groups, and of "participation"--that is of the tendency of primitive man to form diffused concepts which do not allow a clear distinction between various spheres of experience. He applies these viewpoints to the concept of the "soul" as viewed by primitive people.
