This article focuses on the book "Trails, Rails and War. The Life of General G.M. Dodge," by J.R. Perkins. The author says that although this volume has been published under the auspices of the Historical Memorial, and Art Department of Iowa, it by no means represents the best in historical treatment. General Dodge, a military person, while not a brilliant military officer, was a pioneer engineer in the development of railroads, shrewd, farsighted, and able. A graduate of Norwich University in 1850, this Massachusetts boy early sought the West and drifted easily into railroading, beginning as a surveyor and settling by 1857.
