This article focuses on the book "The Child and the World. Dialogues in Modern Educations," by Margaret Naumburg. Progressive educators have criticized conventional education on the grounds that its methods are too much like those of a factory, that its psychology is not sufficiently subtle and, therefore, pays too little heed to the individual peculiarities of children, that its curriculum is too stereotyped and formal, that it gives too little opportunity for spontaneity and initiative, and that such forms of self-expression as art, handicrafts, and music are grossly neglected.
