The article discusses about the book "The Cradle of the Deep," by Joan Lowell. Is "The Cradle of the Deep" an authentic autobiography, or is it a romance concocted by the author from a background of some seafaring experience on the Pacific Ocean? If it had been put before the public as fiction it would be entitled to a good rating as a story and a somewhat lower position as a piece of literary craftsmanship. But the primary trouble with Joan Lowell's episodes is not that they are impossible but that they are too numerous. Even in seventeen years so many events do not come into the life of one person or one ship. Joan Lowell's story reads like a collection of all the good sea anecdotes of which she ever heard.
