Architecture when truly national, grows out of the life and needs of a people. It depends upon climate, available building materials, economic status, and national habits. It varies from the palmthatched hut of the South Seas to the igloo of the Esquimaux; from the Moorish palace, with its interior gardens and much-used roof, to the almost impenetrable castle on the Rhine. American architecture, in its essentials, was imported from North and Central Europe--just as were the first bricks that went into it--because our early settlers were mostly from that part of the world. It is not born of, nor adapted to, the needs of the U.S. In the early days necessity led to some native touches, as in the log cabin and the sod house.
