This article focuses on the political developments in the U.S. and around the world. The defeat of Robert W. Stewart by John D. Rockefeller, in the contest for control of the Standard Oil Co. of Indiana was a personal triumph for the latter, but it was far from being a vindication of American business honor. Rockefeller won in the vote because he controlled 5,500,000 shares as against Stewart's 3,000,000, but the individual stockholders voted almost two to one to sustain Stewart. Moreover, the housecleaning, which the company needed, was not carried out.
