Some military planners in the Pentagon, Virginia, probably think so, for the Danes are behaving like rather reluctant allies. A few months ago the government's decision to extend the period of military service to eighteen months, on the insistence of General Matthew Bunker Ridgway, occasioned rebellious demonstrations by several garrisons. More important, on June 23, the leader of the Social Democratic Party, Hans Hedtoft, after months of wavering, announced that he would not consent to the establishment of foreign air bases on Danish soil.
