Earl Jowitt, Great Britain's opposite number in standing, although not in duties of Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, joins a most exclusive company, those disinterested bystanders who doubt that Alger Hiss is guilty of the crime which aroused Senator Joseph McCarthy to get into the act, made Richard Nixon Vice-President, and landed Alger Hiss himself in jail. This has been described in Jowitt's book "The Strange Case of Alger Hiss," which has been reviewed by Charles Alan Wright.
