Western pacifists actively opposed to the war in Vietnam have suddenly found an ally in French President Charles de Gaulle. As a result, France is replacing Canada as the favorite refuge for young men from the U.S. who refuse to fight, and the rate of desertion from U.S. forces stationed in Europe has taken a dramatic upward turn. Wherever Americans travel in Western Europe, they are likely to come across leaflets addressed to soldiers and tourists and urging protest against Washington's Vietnamese policy. These are printed in England and distributed by a dozen international semi-underground organizations which claim to have assisted many American deserters in their flight from the reach of the US.
