The article presents information on two books. "The Private Correspondence of Nicolo Machiavelli," by Orestes Ferrara, is not, as the title might seem to indicate, a complete edition of Machiavelli's private letters, but rather an essay on the character of Machiavelli as seen in his correspondence with excerpts from the letters. On the basis of studies in Italian archives of the period the author recently published a new biography of Machiavelli. "Lorenzo the Magnificent," by David Loth, has nothing new for a serious student, but the casual reader will be spurred to curiosity concerning a period presented with much skill and vividness.
