The article presents information on the book "A Cultural History of the Modern Age. From the Black Death to the World War," vol. I, "Renaissance and Reformation," by Egon Friedell and translated from the German by Charles Francis Atkinson. This is the first volume to be translated of a projected four-volume history of European civilization. In the body of his work Friedell almost never documents his assertions, weighs conflicting testimony or balances probabilities. He simply makes the flat cocksure statement. When he wants to prove a dubious point he blandly ignores all instances that tend to discredit it. Thus he maintains that in the Italian Renaissance art and literature were created exclusively for a select audience of connoisseurs and experts.
