The best-oiled and smoothest-running publicity machine operated in the United States during the twentieth century has been that controlled by the Board of Directors of the Mother Church, the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts. Acting through these agencies, the directors have in recent years reduced unfavorable publicity to almost nothing, at the same time that they have secured columns and pages of free space for their lectures and other means of spreading their gospel.
