The article focuses on the place Saint Augustine, Florida, which is the oldest European settlement in the U.S. It has some ancient houses, an old Spanish fort and a network of narrow, crooked streets. The charm of the city does not lie so much in any of these physical facts as in its atmosphere, which a seasoned traveler soon recognizes as Latin. Names and faces that one encounters make it easy to believe, as one is told, that about two-thirds of the permanent population is of Spanish extraction. But in almost indefinable ways the Latinity of Saint Augustine is even better authenticated by the respect for amenities of life and an easy tolerance of the people residing there.
