The article focuses on the book "The New Background of Science," by James Jeans. The book exhibits the new science against the background of an old philosophy. The dilemmas in which the author finds himself are the inevitable consequences of this incongruous setting. Modern physics is here depicted as a quest for an ultimate, undefined reality. The objects of science, protons, electrons, and photons, are supposed to be somehow nearer to this reality than the objects of daily experience.
