The article focuses on the book "The First Wife and Other Stories," by Pearl S. Buck. The article presents fourteen short stories divided into three sections: Old and New, Revolution, and Flood. All deal realistically with events which take place in contemporary China. The common theme is that of the transition from the old ideas to the new. The title is from the long short-story, the most moving one included here called The First Wife. It deals with the return of the young Chinese husband and father who has received an American education.
