The article focuses on the work of the U.S. playwright S.N. Behrman. There is no American dramatist who has more clearly defined or more convincingly defended an individual and specific talent. It is difficult to discover in the rather commonplace incidents of his career any explanation of the fact that the whole cast of his mind should be as different as it is from that of any of his fellows, but from the very beginning it was evident that he had accepted and assimilated the Comic Spirit so successfully that he could write with a consistent clarity of thought and feeling unrivaled on the stage.
