This article presents the author's views on the issue of the decline of American bread which can no longer be ignored. The Drifter would enlist the aid of all who love their country against that abomination known as the "sandwich loaf." A country cannot escape responsibility for its bread; in most cases, in fact, the bread of a country seems to partake significantly of the national character. The Italian loaf is squat and wide like the mother of ten Italian children. Because it is made of the whole flout it is fibrous and resistant to the teeth like a kernel of wheat fresh from the field. French bread, though a bit more refined, tastes as if it were made from flour.
