The author says that since 1932 public-spirited people in Detroit, Michigan have been manifesting sharp interest in slum conditions. Social workers have exposed painful facts concerning the misery and degradation of Negro families living in Detroit's East Side slum district. Public indignation has been further stirred by the statistics from city-wide social surveys which show the results of unsanitary and shameful housing conditions. The ceremony over, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt returned to Washington, confident that all was well.
