The article presents a section in which an anonymous columnist, referred as " The Drifter" in the periodical "The Nation," compares social conditions in the U.S. and the Soviet Union. "The Drifter" has received a letter from his friend referencing a trip to High Mountains in Nevada. What impressed as much as it delighted him, in reading this letter, was its evidence of the continuity of society, the pull of tradition that holds families together, even large, widely dispersed families, with no money and no worldly goods to speak of except the burden of some 20,000 acres of none too fertile land. The Drifter is aware that his uncomplaining acceptance of this state of affairs will marks him once more as an ostrich with his head in the sand who cannot see the torrents that are sweeping us all into a still newer day.
