Britain's Protective Budget

Hobson, J. A. | May 18, 1932 issue

The first budget in Great Britain's new protective era was announced in May, 1932 by Neville Chamberlain, Chancellor of the Exchequer. The budget speech itself gratified nobody. It failed to fulfil any hopes. The wealthy had confidently anticipated a cut in the too high income tax, which they did not get. Economists looked for large reductions in the cost of the civil services, and the announcement of some large conversion loan that would ease the debt burden of £300,000,000 which the taxpayers must find every year and which has grown heavier with the lower price level. Some changes are made by the restriction of the tea duty and a manipulation of sugar duties and subsidy to farmers and imperial producers.
