This article focuses on the American business mind. If the works of economic experts and business leaders have been a disappointment, the words of other Americans have been something much less appetizing. Indeed, the depression, like famine, seems to have brought in its wake a pestilence of pettiness. A list two columns long of examples in this category is presented : (1) the pious platitudes of well-fed ministers who have been earning their dole for months with sermons on the spiritual benefits of economic distress and the joy of giving; (2) those "woman's-place-is-in-the-home" economists who suggest that all married women be fired; (3) the barber-chair philosopher who, between applications of the lotion and the talcum, states firmly that the only people out of work are the ones that don't want to work.
