The article focuses on the book "The Diary of Our Own Samuel Pepys: 1911-1934," by Franklin P. Adams. To keep a diary in public, as Adams has done for a quarter of a century in four successive New York newspapers, is not to be like Samuel Pepys, English government official who kept his not only in private but in shorthand. Or so it seems. The fact may be otherwise in Adams's case and indeed the author is sure it is; for he finds him in these volumes to have preserved his privacy after all-to have expressed himself with a strange and startling quietness in the midst of four million words which seemed as one reads them week by week to be noisy merely with the world's doings.
