The author has never been among the most passionate admirers of American politician and prominent lawyer John W. Davis, and so he was pleased when a less well-known lawyer put his eye out before the United States Supreme Court in the Associated Press case. Of course he speaks as a partisan, since the issue concerned the Newspaper Guild and the right of reporters to organize. But even wholly neutral commentators remarked the brilliant performance of Charles E. Wyzanski who spoke on the side of the government. Wyzanski presented his part of the case in forty-five minutes and reeled off citations without the aid of any notes or papers.
