This article focuses on two books "Hawk Among the Sparrows," by Desmond Hawkins and "The Rising," by Myrtle Johnston. "The Hawk Among the Sparrows" is a slender tale of a small group of people living together in an ordinary middle-class household in a provincial English town. The story itself is so slight, the plot so attenuated, that the novel is merely a distended short story. "The Rising!' well bears out the promise Johnston gave with "Hanging Johnny," which was written when she was still in her teens.
