There has been much talk but little documentation of U.S. Senator Huey Long's services to labor in Louisiana during 1935. George E. Wallace, vice-president of Louisiana State Federation of Labor, wrote an open letter to the president of the federation, calling Huey Long the common enemy of organized labor in Louisiana. Wallace wrote, under Long wages in the state have declined, hours have been lengthened, and the condition of the workers has grown steadily worse. Less than two weeks after his open criticism of Senator Long, Wallace was fired from his job as a bather at Hotel Bentley in Alexandria, Louisiana, because its manager feared a boycott and other reprisals by Long's henchmen.
