This article focuses on political and economic conditions in the U.S. during 1935. In the U.S., Gross farm income for 1934 is estimated at about $7,200,000,000, the average in that year having dropped to $800. Some 39 farmers out of every 1,000 in 1934 lost their farms. The tax bill does not promise any considerable increase in revenue. The $250,000,000-estimate of its sponsors is an insignificant sum in the present scale of government spending. Nor will it yield even this amount unless it is buttressed by an amendment ending the issuance of tax-exempt bonds.
