The article discusses two books on Jews, "A History of the Jews," by Abram Leon Sachar and "The Jews in the Christian Era," by Laurie Magnus. According to the author, in his preface Sachar shows that he understands the special problems of writing Jewish history, but in his text he reveals himself incapable of coping with them. His book becomes, in spite of the resistance of the subject matter, the traditional political history. Where it attempts first-hand work, as in its treatment of American Jewry, it succeeds in no more than a naming of names by "Who's Who" standards.
