The article discusses the book "Joseph Fouché" by Stefan Zweig. The book presents a portrait of a politician. It contains a neatly stylized essay and a frame arranged in advance so that a portrait may fit into it. What does actually emerge from a perusal of this book is the fact that the human side of the character is at least, worthy of a more full-blooded biographer. There is no questioning Zweig's scholarship. He has his facts delicately at his finger tips. He is able to raise the curtain on a scene and drop it at the proper interval. He can describe, narrate and draw a wash over his bleak outlines which has some resemblance, at least, to color. But his creation of Fouch´ speaks to readers only after he has pulled wires.
