The article discusses the book "The Silence of Colonel Bramble," by André Maurois. The book is a war fiction introduced by Brand Whitlock. Whitlock, with the spirit of an American Legionnaire recalling "the good old days" in France, tells us how he discovered the manuscript of the book and of his immediate confidence in the author's ability. No doubt about it, those were days when men walked like gods, brave and bashful, good fellows all of them, putting up a fair, clean, broad-shouldered fight for democracy, some of them taking a little time off for writing books. No wonder Whitlock has a special place reserved in his heart for this wartime discovery of his, with its harmless irony that brings a wry smile to lips even though eyes are filled with tears. Those English officers that Whitlock and Maurois knew were such, dear, stupid fellows.
