Soldiers Old, Soldiers New

Look from the grandstands and people over the plain, upon a sea of men in uniform, 167,000 strong, so the loud speakers insist-and one have a vision of the eleventh annual field day of the Stahlhelm, the militaristic American Legion of Germany. It is indeed a sea of humanity, the author use this overworked, worn-out phrase deliberately because the field-gray of the uniforms and the unending ranks of men do suggest waves of the ocean. But the waves of the ocean are restless, this mass of gray humanity stands for hours and hours in a wet field without food or drink, yet without restlessness, with perfect discipline.
