Time was when the Western film was the most popular as well as the most characteristic product of cinematic art. To the majority of its admirers it provided, to use the cant phrase, "an easy escape from actuality." The present revival of the Western film raises the problem whether in its new form of a talkie it has preserved the old elements of its appeal, and whether it can still find favor with lowbrows and highbrows alike. The use of dialogue makes acting much more important than before, and this means either that the characterization and psychology are more true to life, with the resultant loss of "romance."
