This article focuses on North Carolina's senators. For nearly thirty years the same men, Furnifold McLendell Simmons and Lee Slater Overman, have represented North Carolina in the United States Senate. In the stead of its two veterans North Carolina is sending to the Senate men who are almost wholly opposites. Cameron Morrison is a picturesque fighter, the other, Josiah William Bailey, is a scholar whose devotion to abstract principles of right and wrong, and specifically to righteousness in civil and political affairs, borders on fanaticism.
