This article focuses on the activities of the Nationalists in Puerto Rico. In February 1936, two Nationalists assassinated Colonel Thomas J. Riggs, head of the insular police. The assassins were seized and, while in the hands of the police, were shot. Although Colonel Riggs was popular with the Puerto Ricans and was himself a believer in independence, the cold-blooded murder of the two Puerto Rican "martyrs" amused not only the Nationalists but also great numbers of Puerto Ricans who opposed Nationalist method. Americans thought of the murder of Colonel Riggs, Puerto Ricans thought of the murder of the two assassins.
