Background of the Gallup Riot

In this article the author focuses on the political and social history of Gallup, a small coal-mining town in New Mexico. This town flamed into the news dispatches on April 4, 1935 with the shooting of a sheriff and an unemployed miner and the wounding of five workers and two deputy sheriffs. It is in Chihuahuita that a majority of the blacklisted coal-miners live. A large number of these people have been on direct government relief since the big strike in 1933. The author refers to the problems related to the housing of these coal-miners.
