This article presents information regarding the book "Labby--The Life of Henry Labouchere," by Hesketh Pearson. Hesketh Pearson, in this lively study, likens his subject to Sydney Smith and Samuel Butler. Like them, he says, Henry Labouchere was a genius who saw through the establishment and whom the establishment therefore could not afford to take seriously. "Labby" might also in some ways be likened to George Bernard Shaw. His wit and impudence were somewhat Shavian in quality, as were his irreverence toward the sacred cows of the upper classes and the habit, rather disconcerting even to his constituents, of refusing to sentimentalize in behalf of causes he championed.
