The article focuses on the book "Letters From Iceland," by W.H. Auden and Louis MacNeice. Those people who wish young poets to be deadly serious and all of a piece will be annoyed and baffled by Audens travel book, written with a new collaborator. These letters, rhymed and unrhymed, are consistently amusing and frequently brilliant, but they do not repeat the tone of books written by emotional travelers, philosophical travelers, trippers, or escapists. Both Auden and MacNeice are on to kinds of attitude which can be struck by the English, whether poets or not, in strange landscapes.
