The article focuses on the Townsend Plan movement which holds out the promise of riches to the old and poor in the U.S. F.E. Townsend has instructed his adherents to vote for any Republican or anti-New Deal democrat who indorses the plan. The Townsend movement stilt has a formidable following in the states of the Columbia River basin. Townsend himself attracts record crowds when he speaks at County fairs. This is serious for the New Deal, social and economic reforms initiated by U.S. Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, for it diverts support from an Administration that has enacted pension legislation and throws it to candidates who have no intention of supporting any such legislation that would actually be effective.
