This article focuses on the writings of Wendell Willkie, president of the Commonwealth and Southern Corporation in the U.S. His theme song is the Ruination Blues. The U.S. government was so much touched by Mr. Willkie's recital that it had agreed to pay ten million dollars more for his Tennessee subsidiary than the government thought it was worth. It was regarded as a victory for the forces of "liberal business" that a move was started to nominate Mr. Willkie for the post of the U.S. President on the Republican ticket in 1940.
