The article discusses the book "Bacon," by Charles Williams. Historians of logic have known for a long time that the place given to Francis Bacon in the history of modern thought was almost entirely undeserved. And they have also known that the lip praises paid to the "Great Verulam" by the scientists of the generation which followed him are no reliable criteria of the worth of his contribution. This has been a matter of common knowledge since the controversy started by German historians of philosophy in the middle of the 19th century, and more recently men have adequately confirmed the judgment against Bacon in an indirect way through their researches into the origins of modern thought.
