The article discusses the book "James Joyce and the Making of Ulysses," by Frank Budgen. This book by an English painter who met Joyce in Zurich in 1918 and had many talks with him while "Ulysses" was in the final stages of composition is in many respects the most valuable that has so far appeared on that author. Its principal value lies in the many direct quotations from Joyce's conversations during this period—remarks on the nature of the work he was then engaged in writing, on the problems of artistic creation, on life and art in general. Unlike important modern novelists, Joyce has always carefully observed the distinction between the creative and what Kenneth Burke calls the "essayistic" in his fiction.
