The Humiliation of India

The Indian people have been stirred as seldom before by the tragedy of the earthquake in Bihar and Nepal. For the relief of the sufferers from the earthquake the poorest, in spite of their dire poverty, and the lower middle class, which has suffered so much from the trade depression and unemployment, have given generously, perhaps more generously than the rich and the well-to-do. The people have stood up bravely to face the unthinking cruelty of nature and have tried to fight it and lessen its tragic effects. Nature is often pitiless and cruel. Despite feeling helpless they bow to it, or combat it and try to control it, according to temperaments and the measure of strength and will within. But there are other earthquakes which are not caused by unthinking nature but by thinking man.
